Teens Changing Gaston County Gives Back

Teens Changing Gaston County is a youth-led philanthropy board, consisting of 9th-12th grade students in Gaston County.  The TCGC Board meets once a month during the school year to learn about the grant making process, volunteer in the community, network with nonprofit professionals, and socialize with other teens throughout the county.

At their most recent meeting, the Board evaluated grant applications from fellow peers regarding service projects. With funds administered by the Gaston Community Foundation, the teens award a total of $5,000 to the following organizations:

The Lighthouse: Children's Advocacy Center - $800
Emma Hughlett will use the funds to support 2 programs at The Lighthouse Children’s Advocacy Center: Celebrate and Kara’s Kloset. Celebrate will be a celebration party given to a child at the end of their therapy program to celebrate recovery and positive future thinking. Kara’s Kloset will be a collection of resources to be used by Lighthouse staff to redecorate a space that might be a trigger for a child, promoting the recovery of a child after surviving events such as sexual or physical abuse.

Holy Angels - $750
Richie Gray will help provide the residents of Holy Angels with new fine arts equipment so they can have musical practice, play games, and even host live performances.

Crisis Assistance Ministry - $1,000
Laney Moran will use the funds to establish food pantries in high schools for students in need. The pantries give students a quick, easy access to whatever food they need while being discrete so the students feel comfortable.

Keep Gastonia Beautiful - $700
Carson Carr and Zackary Carr will use the funds to support a project with Keep Gastonia Beautiful. The project will display positive and encouraging words as well as symbols that represent our city throughout greenways, parks and other public locations.
