Artspace - Coming Soon to Gastonia!
What is the Community Foundation’s role with Artspace?
The Community Foundation of Gaston County has adopted Artspace Gastonia as their community initiative for the next four years and generated a great deal of support in the form of private investment dollars and community awareness. In May of 2013, the Community Foundation signed a pre- development contract for a four story building to provide affordable housing for 30 to 40 occupants in downtown Gastonia.
What is Artspace?
Artspace is the leading developer of arts facilities in the nation. As a nonprofit real estate developer, Artspace specializes in creating, owning and operating affordable spaces for artists and creative businesses to live and work.
What is a live/work project?
A live/work project is a residential building in which each dwelling has extra space (100 to 150 square feet) the artists can use as a studio. Live/work units by Artspace have consistent design elements, such as high ceilings, large windows, durable surfaces and wide doorways. Projects also include common spaces such as galleries, meeting rooms and green space that encourage tenant engagement, cooperation and community involvement. Most Artspace live/work projects are mixed-use buildings with housing on the upper floors and non-residential space on the lower floors.
The Gastonia City Council voted to support the Artspace project ( $10-$12 million) and agreed to discuss terms to sale the parking lot on the corner of South Street and Franklin Blvd as a potential site for the project. This location is deemed excellent for the continued economic development in the downtown area.
Caromont Health has expressed interest in establishing a wellness clinic in the Artspace building. This exciting proposal would be the first of its kind in the country for Artspace and a model for future projects.
