Foundation's Largest Grant

$1,000,000 to the Gaston County Family YMCA

Beginning in 2017, the Community Foundation will provide the first contribution of a $1,000,000 multiyear grant awarded to the Gaston County Family YMCA. To date, this is the largest grant made by the Foundation. “It is imperative for the Foundation to continually seek impactful investments in our community. The Warlick Family YMCA will touch the lives of many and provide a destination for a wide spectrum of healthy activities,” stated Ernest Sumner, Foundation President.

The 60,030 square-foot YMCA facility will replace both the Central YMCA, on Franklin Blvd. and the South Gaston Family YMCA, on Union Road. The new YMCA will incorporate traditional Y health and wellness activities, youth and family activities, aquatics, and progressive skill programs that reflect the natural surroundings and opportunities offered at the site.

What to Expect from the new YMCA:

  • The Facility – The two-story facility will feature a wellness area overlooking the lake, indoor running track, gymnasium, multiple specialized group exercise studios, and an intergenerational community space.
  • The Aquatic Center – a two-pool Aquatic Center was designed with both lap swimmers and swimlessons in mind. The lap pool willbe set at 82 degrees while the recreational pool will be set at 86 degrees. This allows for multiple activities to take place at the same time.
  • Lake Access – The YMCA owns Robinwood Lake and will provide program space for the members to include boating, fishing, and special events.
  • The Lakeside Chapel – The chapel will be a multipurpose space with programming. With seating for 200 and room for additional in the grass, there will be ample space available for churches to hold Sunday service as well as families to attend a movie night.
  • Woods and Trails – The initial plans call for over 2 miles of trails throughout the woods, a day camp village with the ability to tent camp, and spaces for quiet meditation.
  • The Hearth and Café – The Y lobby will be defined by a beautiful hearth and healthy café. This pairing allows Y Members to build community, grab a bite with friends, and spend the entire day at the lake.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Community Foundation on this project,” said Tony Sigmon, YMCA CEO. “The new Warlick Family YMCA allows for expansion of all Y related activities. It also creates a sense of community and a facility for all ages, ethnicities, and genders to congregate. The YMCA recognizes the impact that the Foundation’s largest grant will make in Gaston County and for the success of the new YMCA.”

It is imperative for the Foundation to continually seek impactful investments in our community.
