Organization Proposed Amount Summary of Request for Funds
Community Foundation of Gaston County $40,000 In honor of its 40th anniversary, the Community Foundation of Gaston County would like to offer an Agency Endowment Challenge as one of its 2018 grant opportunities. The Foundation views endowments as a critical building block in developing the capacity and future sustainability of nonprofit organizations. They have also been a major part of our Foundation’s asset base with over $20 million dollars in Agency Endowment Funds. During the Endowment Challenge, the Foundation will offer 1:2 matching grants of $5,000 to 8 nonprofit organizations to establish or to build an existing agency endowment fund at The Community Foundation of Gaston County. Grant recipients will have 18 months from the date of the award to raise the full match. Grant dollars will be transferred into endowment fund once the match has been met. The organization will follow the Foundation's spend policy (currently 4.5%). The spend policy will ensure the fund's corpus is intact and ensure the long-term financial health of the nonprofit and it's beneficiaries.
Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden $30,000 Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden will be celebrating our 20th Anniversary during 2019. One of the six goals set forth by the board and leadership team in the current strategic plan is to elevate the quality and impact of programs, exhibitions and events, ensuring that they are mission-driven and financially successful. Building on the hugely successful Chinese Lantern Exhibit held in 2017 we have secured a glass artist for a four month exhibit in 2019!
Dream Center of Gaston County $25,000 The Dream Center Academy (DCA) is the signature program of the Dream Center of Gaston County. DCA accepts up to 40 rising sixth graders annually into our 5-week summer and academic year afterschool program and will attend the Academy through their high school graduation. All students are identified as having the potential to graduate from high school and gain college admission; each faces obstacles that could prohibit them from achieving these goals.
Phoenix Counseling Center $20,000 The purpose of our project is to enhance our abilities in assisting the individuals we serve at the community center in getting connected to necessary community resources such as housing, transportation, medical care, child care, behavioral health services, etc. The project would allow for the employment of a third peer support specialist as well as a transportation program allowing individuals to get to resources, appointments, jobs, etc. Phoenix Community & Outreach Center (PCOC) Peer Support staff
BackPack Weekend Food Program, Inc. $15,000 The BackPack Weekend Food Program, Inc. (BWFP) provides nutritionally-balanced, individually packaged, non-perishable bags of food on the weekends to eligible students K-12 in Gaston County Schools during the school year. Children who are hungry are less likely to come to school alert and ready to learn at their optimal potential. Funding helps to ensure the BWFP mission of enriching the education experience for these students by helping to eliminate hunger on the weekends.
Gaston Christian School Inc $15,000 A long-term plan has been to expand the fine arts program at Gaston Christian School while making an impact on Gaston County. This building will be used to teach our students through drama performances, set construction, costuming, band, chorus, and ballet. These classes will enhance the students' talents and encourage the arts in the community. We anticipate holding events to support Gaston County through the arts.
Gaston Day School $15,000 Gaston Day School is requesting a grant of $75,000 to renovate the lobby of the Pamela Kimbrell Warlick Visual & Performing Arts Center (PKW). We would ask that the funds be held in the PKW Maintenance Fund at the Community Foundation, to be drawn down as the renovations progress.

Gaston YMCA $15,000 The Resource Connection Gateway works to identify individuals and families in our community in need and to establish a plan to address those needs through counseling, direct access to human service providers, and emotional support. Believing that social capital is a catalyst in the community development process, the next phase in the Gateway's activities is to strengthen social ties and networks throughout Gaston County for those we serve and our community at large.
Off the Streets Program, Inc. $15,000 Off The Streets Program, Inc. will use the requested funds to provide a stipend to continue to pay the transportation coordinator and counselor, who will provide one-on-one and group counseling sessions for women who reside in the transitional living house and clients who have completed their time in the transitional living house.
The Schiele Museum of Natural History and Planetarium $12,500 The Schiele is requesting support from the Community Foundation to make improvements to the Grist Mill and the immediate surrounding area to support the Gemstone Mine program available to student and childcare groups as well as the general public.
Gaston School of the Arts $10,000 The Arts for All program offers students a venue to explore the arts in a non-threatenging, quality environment. The program allows the students who are a part of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Gaston County and Gaston County Public Title One Schools to come to the exceptional facilities at Gaston School of the Arts (GSOA) to study art and drama and experience shows in the GSOA Children's Playhouse Theatre.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina $10,000 Grant funds will be used to purchase a floor scrubber for improved food safety. SHFBM has increased our food distribution in Gaston County to residents in need of food. All equipment is needed to support this increase and to replace equipment that has aged out at this branch.
Gaston Literacy Council, Inc. $8,000 Gaston Literacy Council, Inc. is requesting funds to upgrade classroom technology equipment (hardware and software,) and renewal of site license subscriptions. Funds will be used for the purchase of Lenovo ThinkCentre M710 towers for the connected classroom and laptops, HP 250 Notebook PCs to be used with SmartBoard instruction in classrooms. Funding is also requested for software upgrades and site license renewal (Smart Suite, Aztec, and Rosetta Stone.)
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Gaston $7,500 We are requesting a total of $17,000 for maintenance on our buses. This maintenance will be beneficial in the long term preservation of three of our buses.

Our two mini buses were generously funded by the Community Foundation in 2015.
Classroom Central, Inc. $7,500 Classroom Central collects and distributes free school supplies to students living in poverty. We served 41 schools and 7,800 students in Gaston County and distributed supplies valued at $452,557.95 to Gaston County teachers and students during the 2017-2018 school year. We respectfully request funding to provide core, urgently needed school supplies to be distributed through our Free Store and ClassVROOM Central Mobile Free Store program to serve schools and students in need.
Heart Society of Gaston County, Inc. $7,500 The requested grant would be used to purchase cardiac related medication through local pharmacies for clients who are uninsured, for clients who have insurance but cannot afford their co-pay, and for clients who are waiting for their application to be approved by the pharmaceutical company patient assistance programs.
The Gastonia's Potters House $7,500 Funds would be used to purchase and install two new A/C units in the residential housing area of The Potters House, also known as The Secret Place. This area houses clients in recovery and provides a safe and stable place for their children to visit as well.
Bit of Hope Ranch $5,000 Bit of Hope Ranch and Shining Hope Farms are working together to provide equine assisted therapy facilities—specifically a therapy clinic space, for clients in Shining Hope Farm's Hippotherapy services. This includes a horse(s), a certified instructor, and OT/PT and trained volunteers in a covered arena space with appropriate equipment.
Children's Cancer Partners of the Carolinas $5,000 Your grant will be matched by our Expansion Challenge Donors 3+ dollars to 1 and used exclusively to assist Gaston County parents/caregivers who need help getting children to cancer treatments at Levine, Duke, UNC or for more specialized care in NY, TX or beyond, or with critical homecare needs. We also provide emotional/peer support for the children, their siblings and caregivers. If treatment fails, we assist with funeral expenses and grief counseling.
Gaston College Foundation $5,000 Grant funds will be used for construction and equipment costs for the New Veterinary Medical Technology Education Building at Gaston College. This will be a challenge grant; for every dollar given to the program by local veteranarians, the Foundation will match up to $5,000.
Girls on the Run of the Foothills $5,000 We are requesting $15,000 in funding that would allow our organization to provide 59% of program participants with need-based scholarships during the 2018-19 school year.
Let Me Run Gaston County $5,000 Let Me Run of Gaston County requests funding to provide: 60 Program Scholarship to participants in need of financial assistance and a shoe scholarship for 14 boys. Shoes will be purchased from a local vendor, Walk and Run Belmont.
Little Theater of Gastonia $4,700 LTG is working with GSM Roofing on the replacement of the roof for the theater building. GSM Roofing has recommended that the existing gutters be removed and new ones installed at a cost of $4,700.00. New gutters, while not included in the roof replacement base proposal, would improve the performance and prolong the life of the roof. GSM has provided information as to the costs of the gutters as a possible add-on.
Gaston County Museum of Art and History $4,000 The Gaston County Museum has hosted the Gaston County Schools Art Show (K-12) for almost 10 years. Professional judges from North Carolina anonymously judge artwork from Gaston Middle and High Schools, and students receive a small award. The Museum requests funding to grow the size and scope of artwork submitted, and to award the Best in Show recipient at the High School level with a College Scholarship towards a school of their choice.
Least of These Carolinas $4,000 Requesting $3,000 for Bags of Hope & $3,000 for Bridge Camp
Provides 20 Bags of Hope and allows 15 children to attend camp.

House of Mercy, Inc. $3,500 House of Mercy provides a hospital-grade recliner in each of its resident rooms. These recliners have developed worn areas and tears. Their condition makes them not only unsightly, but also difficult to clean properly. We are requesting funds to have all seven recliners reupholstered. If full funding is not available, we request funding to reupholster as many recliners as possible based on a unit cost of $500 per recliner.
Junior League of Gaston County $3,000 Our Annual Truck Fest Event is free to the public. We have trucks from our community First Responders as well as private vendors.
This year, we plan to also have the Mammography truck and offer free Mammograms to all attendees. This grant would help us keep our event free to public.
All proceeds from Truck Fest are used to support programs for the education & health of women and children in Gaston county & train women leaders. The Foundation has invited Junior League to have Truck Fest on the day of the Run; eliminating duplicate expenses and encouraging an increase in attendance for both events.
Shining Hope Farms $3,000 We are seeking funding for very necessary improvements to our tack room and office so that these spaces can be more comfortable and functional for the successful operation of our programs. Our tack room is our most used space as it is also our breakroom for staff and volunteers, yet it is not climate controlled. Additionally we are in need of a washer and dryer (necessary for cleaning tack), and new flooring.
Elements of Empowerment Inc. $2,000 The Community Jazz Series is an initiative in partnership with Belmont Abbey College. The successful inaugural season featured four concerts between October 15, 2017 and February 25, 2018. Forthcoming dates for the 2018 -2019 season are expected to be similar to last season, but there is the possibility of an expanded series. Elements of Empowerment, Inc. is requesting grant funds to assist with the costs to contract musical talent for the Community Jazz Series.
Gaston Dance Theatre $1,500 An educational arts program for Gaston County Title I students including a spring time contemporary ballet performance.
Christ Community outreach food ministry $1,000 This allow us to continue to help serve our clients. We not only give food, we rent 22' trucks and travel to Shelby to pickup donated goods from CVS drugs. Which allow us to give medical supplies and toiletries. We also pickup paper products in Shelby and travel to the food bank and pickup. By doing these pickups, help save our clients more money to pay the bills.
